Tiverton-born Samuel Joshua Stockley-Phillips was brought in by Mark Wright before the start of the 2001/02 season from relegated Barnet, where he won the Player of the Season award and also got into the Division Three team of the season. Under Wright he played as a right wingback where his lack of pace often led to him underperforming. When Ian Atkins converted to 4-4-2 Sam again found himself out of position on the right wing, and it wasn`t until towards the end of the season that he played as right back, where he belonged. Was loaned out to Colchester in September 2002 where he really impressed, even scoring for them. He had his loan extended for a second month with a view to a permanent move, but just when it looked that he was on his way talks broke down after Oxford insisted on a sell-on clause, although he did eventually join Colchester, helping them to promotion to Division Two before leaving for Wycombe Wanderers. In November 2009, while at Port Vale, Stockley retired from playing on medical advice after an eye injury.
