Jalal agrees Oxford loan

Oxford United have brought in AFC Bournemouth goalkeeper Shwan Jalal on a one-month emergency loan deal. The 30 year-old shot stopper will stay at the Kassam Stadium until 12 October following injuries to fellow keepers Max Crocombe and Wayne Brown.

The 30-year-old has made over 150 appearances for the Cherries since arriving at Dean Court in August 2008, but has yet to feature for Eddie Howe’s side since winning promotion to England’s second-tier. Born in Baghdad, Iraq, Jalal provides competition for United’s number one jersey as Ryan Clarke is the only other recognised senior goalkeeper at the club.

Understudy Crocombe sustained a shoulder injury during Oxford’s Development Squad’s 1-1 draw with Southend United last week, with the New Zealand Under-20 international likely to be ruled out for up to four weeks. Veteran Wayne Brown is also unavailable after undergoing a foot operation, with youth teamers Josh Hill and Eddie Cavanagh also sidelined with wrist and ankle injuries respectively.

Jalal made his name at Hastings Town before catching the attention of Premier League outfit Tottenham Hotspur early on in his professional career. The experienced goalkeeper eventually played for the likes of Woking, Sheffield Wednesday, Morecambe and Peterborough United.

The former England C international goes straight into the Yellow’s squad to face Cheltenham Town at Whaddon Road this Saturday, with the Us hopeful of preserving their impressive 100% away record this season.

Oxford boss Chris Wilder was delighted to have signed someone of Jalal’s stature: “He is six foot two, has won promotion from this division with Bournemouth and is a very good goalkeeper. He is someone we have seen a lot over the years and we think he will do an excellent job for us.

It is unfortunate for Max because we think very highly of him but Max knows that we need someone pushing Ryan while he is unavailable and Shwan fits the bill perfectly.”
